2026 Road Trip - Day 2

The front desk clerk from the previous day greeted us again on our way out.  Joselyn was so sweet, bright, and cheerful.  She graciously allowed us a photo with Laramie on our way out on May 4.  She even handed me her phone and asked me to take a photo for her!  Apparently we made an impression, as will be revealed later.

We got spoiled with free breakfasts at Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express.  Eggs, pancakes or waffles made fresh.  After coming home, having breakfast ready for me is something I miss!

While browsing Facebook, I answered a question in a paralegal group on Facebook and my boss, who is also a member of the group, busted me.  “Hey! You are on vacation! Turn your awesome paralegal brain off! lol”  I've found that's a hard thing to do!

We left a little later, around 9:00 a.m., because it was a short drive to Salt Lake City.

Before leaving, I left one of these little chicks in the room in Mom's honor.  I made sure to leave one in each hotel before we left.

This drive is one of the most beautiful on the trip  Gorgeous wide open country and fluffy white clouds in an incredibly blue sky.  We enjoyed cloud shadows for the first time in a very long time.  They're just not noticeable here at home the way they are in wide open spaces.

This is also where we started to see a $2 per gallon drop in gas prices, and odd looking gas nozzles without the vapor collection we're used to in California.  It gave Dad a pause the first time and he checked to make sure he hadn't accidentally grabbed a diesel nozzle.  Windshield washing at each gas stop became mandatory once we entered Utah.

It was heartwarming to see the wildlife corridors over the freeway.  Here is one of several that we saw on this route.  The natural landscape continues over the bridge.

We drove by the Bonneville Salt Flats and the landscape changed dramatically.  At the same time, we started to see rain in the distance.

We arrived at our hotel in Salt Lake City at around 2:00 p.m.  The traffic was horrible with so many confusing junctions all over!  Dad enjoyed seeing a welcome sign with his name on the TV in our rooms on this trip; it makes you feel like a celebrity!  In this room, there was a sliding barn door on the bathroom with no lock!

The Salt Lake City mountain view is incredible – it almost didn’t seem real.

We wanted to stream Outlander but couldn’t.  I also forgot to pack the portable CB radio.  We found a Best Buy in town and headed over there.  The young fella at the front could easily tell us where the HDMI cords were but did not know what a CB radio was!

“A radio you can use to talk to other drives. Truckers use them.  10-4 good buddy?”

He started looking them up on his phone.

“They’re like walkie talkies.”

“What’s a walkie talkie?”  Oh my.

He discovered that they sell CB radios at Best Buy, but only online.  Not even truck stops have CB radios.

We successfully streamed Outlander later in the trip on my laptop using the HDMI connection.

At this point we're trying to figure out how to get light for Dad at night if he needs to use the restroom.  I'm used to sleeping in total darkness and quiet, so that and traffic noise was a challenge for me for a few days.  Luckily, at one hotel they had a night light, and we had that Eureka moment.  We picked up night lights to plug in at the door area, and that worked well for both of us!
