2026 Road Trip - Day 1

I waited to post anything to Facebook or social media about my trip because I don't like people knowing that I am not home for an extended period of time.  I was contemplating a post to Facebook but it seemed too much.  I remembered my dormant blog and will post a day at a time here.

After Mom died six months ago, Dad wanted to go to our old home in Franktown, Colorado.  He thinks he invited me to join him because I have been talking about taking a road trip there for a few years, but I remember asking him if I could tag along!  Either way, I'm grateful that he allowed me to go on this trip with him.  We set up our itinerary and AAA helped in making hotel reservations along the way, and set our sights on May 3 through May 15 for our road trip.  Things changed a bit en route as you will see!

I spent Saturday night May 2 at in the guest room that Dad has set up so we could get an early start for Elko.  We enjoyed dinner with Bex and Aaron that evening and Laramie the Highland Cow made her first appearance on our journey.

Laramie had donned her sunglasses and left the herd to join us on the road trip.  She took selfies with us and posed for scenic shots out the windshield.  She left the rest of her herd of emotional support Highland Cows at my office in case they needed a good listener while I was away.

At the time we thought it was going to be our longest driving day of the trip!  We started seeing snow on mountaintops by 9:30 a.m.  By noon, we were enjoying 80mph speed limits for the most part and enjoying gorgeous scenery.

We were listening to my Spotify playlist and I successfully “Rick rolled” Dad.  We arrived in Elko at about 3:30 pm

In Elko, they had a diplomatic toilet paper setup so the toilet paper wars didn't start until the next day.  Dad wrongly insists that TP needs to go under the roll and I correctly want it to be over the top.  The good-natured battle continued throughout our trip!

While we were trying to figure out what to do for dinner, Dad asked AI for restaurant recommendations.  He wanted Mexican food, and we told "Jill" (our Garmin navigator) to take us to El Koyote.  I wasn't so sure about this location as we got closer to our destination.  Then we turned left before the restaurant as directed and were a bit surprised to see three or four brothels (all legal, as advertised on prominent signs).  Later when I said four, Dad said, "Only four?"  I don't know.  I think I blacked out after three or four.  That location didn't bode well for El Koyote.  We were laughing really hard at the shock to our California sensibilities and not being used this being a legal thing, especially so in your face with descriptive neon signs.  As we drove past the restaurant, we decided that it wasn't the place for us.  We headed to a nearby casino for dinner instead.

I shared the El Koyote/brothel story with my coworkers and my boss told me to keep Dad away from those sketchy places and said that I was transporting a silver fox!  Dad loved that so much that he's adopted Silver Fox as a nickname.

We settled in for the night and tried to get some sleep.  It was hard with so much on our minds in an unfamiliar location but the room was comfy and I appreciated four pillows!
